A medium accuracy wireless positioning technology has been identified as a key component in emerging mobile location-enhanced applications such as emergency services, commercial location-based services and lawful interception applications. A number of technologies have been introduced to meet these market demands, however, until now most customers worldwide have not reached any final decision on which technology to adopt.
Network-based Positioning Technology such as U-TDOA or RF Finger printing has some advantages in that it can support legacy and new handsets without changing handsets, but cost & technical implications for commercial implementation remain an issue. Existing CID (Cell ID) or conventional E-CID (Enhanced CID) is commercially viable in cost but poor & inconsistent performance has resulted in poor end-user experiences.
